How to Change Sony/Panasonic AVCHD Videos’ Format to Fit the iMovie

"I was able to import my Sony Handycam DCR-SR100 mpeg2 files to iMovie, and it looks and sound fine. However, when I upgraded to Lion, I can use iMovie to view my source video on my laptop, I can see them but without audio." -Excerpted from Apple Support Community.
Do you also suffer from kinds of problems in importing your shootings from Sony Handycam to iMovie?
In fact, although Panasonic HDC series, Sony Handycam series, Sony HDR series and Panasonic Lumix DMC series are fantastic high-end camcorders for capturing stunning pictures and movies, most of their recordings in high-definition AVCHD MTS/M2TS format are not supported by iMovie. Even iMovie'11, it is still in poor compatibility with shootings in 1080-60p or 1080-50p, etc. Listed below are the camcorders models that are not accepted by iMovie:
Sony HDR series:
Sony HDR-SR1, Sony HDR-SR11, Sony HDR-SR12, Sony HDR-SR8 Sony HDR-TG5, Sony HDR-UX20, Sony HDR-XR160, etc.

If you have just captured videos with any camcorder models as listed above and want to edit the AVCHD MTS/M2Ts in iMovie/FCP, you will need to convert Sony Handycam/Sony HDR/Panasonic Lumix/Panasonic HDC AVCHD to Mac accepted video format.
